A monk asked Ummon, “What will happen when the leaves fall and the trees become bare?” Ummon said, “Golden wind!” Join us for five days of silence at Golden Wind Sesshin. As autumn paints the trees brilliant colors, golden leaves swirl down, and the wind turns cooler and sharper, experience the beauty of autumn on Dai Bosatsu Mountain as you clear, refresh, and refocus your heart and mind. If you have any questions, please email us or call 845-439-4566 before you register. The fee is $180 for members, $200 for nonmembers. No one will be turned away for lack of funds; please contact the office for assistance.

DBZ: Rohatsu Sesshin/In-Person Registration Closed
Registration is closed for Rohatsu Sesshin for 2023. If you would like to be placed on the waiting list for cancellations, please email the office. Registration is available for online attendance, including the opening ceremony on November 30, daily choka (morning service), afternoon teishos or Dharma talks, the evening programs beginning at 7 pm, and the Jodo-e and closing ceremonies the morning of December 8.
Rohatsu is held each year at Zen temples and monasteries throughout the world to commemorate the enlightenment of Shakyamuni Buddha when he saw a star at dawn on the eighth day of his retreat. This intensive, in-person sesshin is an unsurpassable opportunity for deep practice and realization, inspired by the Buddha’s determination as he sat beneath the Bodhi tree, vowing not to rise until he achieved true awakening. Rohatsu week begins the evening of November 30 and concludes on the morning of December 8 with Jodo-E (Buddha’s Enlightenment Ceremony). Our scheduled sittings will extend farther and farther into the night. Shinge Roshi, Chigan Roshi and Hokuto Osho will give teisho and offer dokusan. Each evening we will hear Hakuin Zenji’s “Rohatsu Exhortations.”
The fee for online participation is $40 for members and $50 for nonmembers. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. ZSS Health Protocols apply.
NYZ: Soen Shaku Sesshin
Join us in-person or online as Hokuto Osho leads this sesshin commemorating the life and teaching of the first Rinzai Zen master to bring Shakyamuni Buddha’s teachings to the West. Full-time participation is encouraged; part-time attendance will be considered as space allows. If you have any questions, or if this will be your first sesshin, please email us before registering. The in-person fee is $140 for members, $165 for nonmembers. (The online participation option has been removed, due to lack of interest.) No one will be turned away for lack of funds; please contact the office for support. ZSS Health Protocols apply.
NYZ: Shobo-ji 55th Anniversary Sesshin/Sesshin Registration Closed
Join us at New York Zendo Shobo-ji to commemorate the founding of our temple. Established on September 15, 1968 by Soen Nakagawa Roshi and Eido Shimano Roshi, it was one of the first Rinzai Zen practice centers in the United States. For over half a century we have continued to offer authentic Rinzai Zen training amid the bustle of life in Manhattan. Sesshin will be led by our abbot, Shinge Roshi, and will include zazen, chanting, sarei, teisho and dokusan. Formal jihatsu meals will be served.
At the conclusion of sesshin we will hold a celebration to honor and give thanks for the decades of contribution Shinge Roshi has made to the Sangha as she prepares for retirement this fall. There will be light dinner and music. The fee is $140 for members, $165 for nonmembers and $25 for the celebration only. No one will be turned away for lack of funds; please contact the office for assistance. ZSS Health Protocols apply.
Registration for Anniversary Sesshin is closed. There are a very few spaces available if you wish to attend the Celebration after the close of Anniversary Sesshin at 6 p.m. on Sunday. You are most welcome to register for Soen Shaku Sesshin, October 27-29 at New York Zendo, and for Harvest Sesshin, November 7-12 at Dai Bosatsu Zendo.
