Introduction to Zen Meditation

Newcomers to the temple are requested to attend one Introduction to Zazen (Zen meditation) class, held on Thursday evenings, before joining the community for regular zazen practice or other scheduled events. The introduction covers the basics of Zen meditation: posture, breathing, and concentration. Beginners will also learn the forms used at New York Zendo for bowing, chanting, and walking meditation (kinhin). No prior experience is necessary.

A quiet atmosphere with minimal distractions is essential to our practice. Please do not wear scented cosmetics, and set your mobile phone, or any cell or wifi device, to silent mode. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

Doors open at 6:15 p.m. You must provide proof of full vaccination when you arrive at the temple. You will be asked to show your vaccination card, or a photo of it, or present your New York State Excelsior Pass. You must wear a mask which fully covers your nose and mouth at all times while inside the temple. If you have any cold or flu symptoms, please do not come to the temple. Read the ZSS Covid Protocols for full details. Please arrive no later than 6:35 p.m. Latecomers will not be admitted. The program will end by 9 p.m. All are welcome to attend, and no reservations are necessary. A $10 contribution is requested.
