Are you new to Zen Buddhism? New York Zendo Shobo-ji offers city dwellers the opportunity to experience traditional Zen practice in the midst of their daily lives; to find a true oasis of deep stillness in the heart of Manhattan.
Every Thursday evening, the Introduction to Zen Meditation class covers the basics of zazen (seated meditation): posture, breathing, and concentration. Beginners will also learn the form used at New York Zendo Shobo-ji: bowing, chanting, and kinhin (walking meditation).
On October 24, Junryu Roshi, founder of Eiryu-ji Zen Center, will lead the class and give a teisho (Dharma talk) after zazen. Junryu Roshi is a member of the White Plum Sangha and teaches in the lineage of Taizan Maezumi Roshi. He holds the rank of 6th degree black belt in Aikido, and is a senior instructor under the United States Aikido Federation.
Junryu Roshi will be available between 5pm and 6pm to meet one-on-one with interested dharma students. This is a unique opportunity to have an informal conversation with a Roshi. To schedule a meeting during this time, please contact the NYZ office at office@newyorkzendo.org.
Doors open at 5:45pm, class begins at 6:15pm. A quiet atmosphere with minimal distractions is essential to our practice. Please do not wear scented cosmetics, and set any electronic device to silent mode. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Refer to Zendo Etiquette for more details. ZSS Health Protocols apply.
A suggested donation of $10 is requested. Registration for the class is not required. For questions, email office@newyorkzendo.org or call 212-861-3333.
