NYZ: Segaki Service

June 20, 2025 by Sabrina Plum

Please join us at New York Zendo as we gather to honor and celebrate our departed loved ones. For our Segaki Service, we will collectively create an altar with photos, ihai (memorial tablets), and mementos of our deceased family and friends.

We will then share a period of silent meditation before beginning our chanting service. Each participant will have the opportunity to offer incense and to include the names of their dearly departed in our dedication. After our chanting service, there will be a short period of nittensoji (temple cleaning) before we gather in the Dharma Hall for an informal lunch.

Doors open at 9:30 a.m. Registration is not required. Contributions in the form of monetary offerings, food, sweets, beverages, or flowers are very welcome. ZSS Health Protocols apply.

This event will also be broadcast online using the regular online zazen link. Please submit the names of any departed you would like honored to office@newyorkzendo.org.

NYZ: NADA in the Zendo

June 20, 2025 by Sabrina Plum

We are all experiencing the overwhelming chaos of the world we live in. The common ground between us all can be experienced and shared through non-verbal communication. Please join us for this special event to receive the benefits of meditation and acupuncture and connect with your inner peace.

Zazen (meditation) and Auricular Acupuncture join forces to offer participants the opportunity to deepen awareness in silence and in community. In this afternoon retreat we will meditate together for 30 minutes with the NADA Auricular Acupuncture Protocol to relax the nervous system. Afterward, tea and open discussion provide a space to share and reflect on the experience.

The NADA Protocol is a non-verbal approach to healing.

NADA involves the gentle placement of up to five small, sterilized disposable needles into specific sites on each ear. Benefits include:

          • Reduced cravings for alcohol and drugs, including nicotine
          • Minimized withdrawal symptoms
          • Increased calmness, better sleep, and less agitation
          • Relief from stress and emotional trauma
          • An easier connection with counseling
          • A discovery of inner quiet and strength

nada [nah-duh]

1. nothing; zero; none:

1. no-nonsense, non-verbal
2. no-drugs, no barriers

2. an ear puncture protocol for recovery
3. a not-for-profit training and advocacy organization

This event will be facilitated by Daishi Kevin Pinzone, Licensed Acupuncturist, and Seiko Maria Santoro, PhD, Licensed Massage Therapist, NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association), Herbalist. The fee for this event is $25. All proceeds will be donated to the Zen Studies Society. If you have any questions, please email office@newyorkzendo.org before registering. ZSS Health Protocols apply.

DBZ: Ohashi Touch, Zen Touch

June 8, 2025 by Sabrina Plum

NYZ: Introduction to Zen Meditation with Junryu Roshi

May 30, 2025 by Sabrina Plum

If you are new to Rinzai Zen Buddhism, New York Zendo Shobo-ji offers city dwellers the opportunity to experience traditional Zen practice and find an oasis of deep stillness in the heart of Manhattan.

Every Thursday evening, the Introduction to Zen Meditation class covers the basics of zazen (seated meditation): posture, breathing, and concentration. Beginners will also learn the form used at New York Zendo Shobo-ji including bowing, chanting, and kinhin (walking meditation).

At the invitation of Chigan Roshi, Junryu Roshi teaches at NYZ on occasion. Junryu Roshi is the founder of Eiryu-ji Zen Center, a Dharma teacher in the lineage of Taizan Maezumi Roshi, a member of the White Plum Sangha, and a 6th Dan Aikido teacher (Shidoin). On the evening of June 19th, Junryu Roshi will lead the introductory class and offer teisho, a formal Zen talk.

Junryu Roshi is available for individual practice interviews and for assistance with physical sitting issues from 5 p.m. Please email the NYZ office if you would like to meet with him.

Please note this evening’s program will begin earlier than usual – doors open at 5:45 p.m. Beginners’ instruction and zazen for those who do not attend the instruction begin at 6:15 p.m. The program runs until approximately 9 p.m.

A quiet atmosphere with minimal distractions is essential to our practice. Please do not wear scented cosmetics, and set any electronic device to silent mode. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Refer to Zendo Etiquette for more details. No prior experience is necessary.

A $10 donation payable by purchasing a pass below is requested from non-members. Please consider becoming a Supporting Member of the Zen Studies Society. ZSS Health Protocols apply.

You are also welcome to join our online Introduction to Zen Meditation.

NYZ: Spring Sutra Collective

May 28, 2025 by Sabrina Plum

Fridays | May 16th – June 27th, 2025 | 5:30 – 6:30pm

Feeling anxious for no reason, or worn out by the usual happy hour scene? Try something different.

Sutra copying is a traditional Buddhist practice that generates merit—for yourself and for all beings. You don’t need to be a Buddhist or a skilled calligrapher to take part.

Moving slowly, stroke by stroke through the Buddha’s words, this practice quiets the mind and anchors you in the present moment.

Join us at New York Zendo Shobo-ji, in the peaceful presence of the Great Buddha statue, and connect with like-hearted practitioners.

This event will take place immediately before Zen in Four Ways – Chinese Calligraphy Workshop and the schedule will be as follows:

  • Friday May 16th
  • Friday May 23rd and 30th
  • Friday June 6th and Saturday June 14th*
  • Friday June 27th

*Please note that class will be held on Saturday June 14th instead of Friday. The Sutra Collective will not be held on June 20th as the calligraphy group will be going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

There is no fee for this class, all are welcome! ZSS Health Protocols apply.

NYZ: Suizen Intensive

May 5, 2025 by Sabrina Plum

Suizen, or “blowing Zen”, refers to the spiritual practice of playing the shakuhachi flute during zazen. The honkyoku repertoire of the shakuhachi – which was developed specifically for Zen practice – has particular technical and aesthetic features that allow it to resist being heard as “music.” Therefore, it tends not to distract the meditating mind in the way that other music might. Compared to other shakuhachi repertoires, honkyoku pieces feature fewer notes with a focus on ornamentation and timbral effects.

There is a famous saying from the world of suizen: ichion jobutsu, meaning “enlightenment in a single note.” Come join us for an afternoon of immersion in this one mysterious note.

Our program will include six forty-minute periods of suizen, with kinhin (walking meditation) in between. Participants must have completed an Introduction to Zen Meditation class before registering.

Solo shakuhachi will be played by Karaku Marco Burmester, who has been studying shakuhachi in New York City and Kyoto since 2006. Karaku has a long-time connection to Dai Bosatsu Zendo as a student of Ronnie Nyogetsu Reishin Seldin, who held workshops at DBZ for many years. He has recently been awarded his shakuhachi teaching certificate and is looking forward to sharing his practice of suizen with the Zen Studies Society Sangha.

The fee for this event is $40 for nonmembers and $30 for Zen Studies Society (ZSS) members. Note that the member price is for ZSS members only – please consider becoming a Supporting Member. If you have any questions, please email office@newyorkzendo.org before registering. ZSS Health Protocols apply.
