DBZ: Rohatsu Sesshin
November 30 @ 7:00 pm - December 8 @ 8:00 am
Rohatsu is held each year at Zen temples and monasteries throughout the world to commemorate the enlightenment of Shakyamuni Buddha when he saw a star at dawn on the eighth day of his retreat. This intensive, in-person sesshin is an unsurpassable opportunity for deep practice and realization, inspired by the Buddha’s determination as he sat beneath the Bodhi tree, vowing not to rise until he achieved true awakening. Rohatsu week begins the evening of November 30 and concludes on the morning of December 8 with Jodo-E (Buddha’s Enlightenment Ceremony). Our scheduled sittings will extend farther and farther into the night. Shinge Roshi, Chigan Roshi and Hokuto Osho will give teisho and offer dokusan. Each evening we will hear Hakuin Zenji’s “Rohatsu Exhortations.” If you have any questions or have not attended sesshin at DBZ before, please call 845-439-4566 or email email@example.com before you register. The ZSS Covid Protocols apply to all in-person participants. The fee for in-person participation is $525 for members and $600 for nonmembers. Online participants will be able to join Hoen-ji’s morning service each morning, teisho from DBZ each afternoon, and chanting and zazen from DBZ each evening. The suggested contribution for online participation is $150 – $300. Participants are welcome to contribute less or more, in accord with their means.
Given the ongoing unpredictability of the Covid-19 epidemic, we may need to shift events to online participation only as the situation requires. Please check our website frequently and sign up for our Zen Studies Society Events email for regular updates.
