Poetry – Sesshin

July 10, 2024 by Devyani Sadh

By Jigen Paul Willis

The translator suppressed a smile
as the Zen master explained.
For thirty years he taught the Dharma
as he had been ordained.
But his Japanese was badly rusted
and his English very poor,
and he told us all calmly that
he really doesn’t speak
much of any language
anymore.
