The Open Space Program has been a sanctuary for AA recovery groups, yoga, tai chi, holistic health workshops, martial arts, Zen arts, and writing retreats. Participants return time and again to immerse themselves in this safe, healing, and joyful environment. A notable example is the Healing and Wellness Weekend, which the Open Space Program has hosted for decades. This tradition began when Dai Bosatsu Zendo (DBZ) first opened its doors to those with HIV/AIDS and their caregivers—a time when fear and misunderstanding often left them unwelcome elsewhere. The program offered a refuge for their work—grappling with the devastation of the disease and mourning the loss of loved ones. As one holistic practitioner who participated during these weekends said, “Who was healing, and who was being healed? All of us.” Today, the Healing and Wellness Weekend welcomes anyone suffering from chronic illness, along with their caregivers and volunteer bodywork practitioners.
Currently, Open Space retreats are held at Dai Bosatsu Zendo, a beautiful Zen monastery with traditional Japanese architecture. Participants are invited to join a modified monastic schedule that includes zazen (seated meditation), chanting, samu (work practice), and traditional jihatsu (three-bowl) meals in the main dining room.
