New York Zendo

One of the first Rinzai Zen practice centers to be established in the West, New York Zendo Shobo-ji opened its doors on Sept. 15, 1968. An oasis of deep stillness in the heart of Manhattan, New York Zendo offers city dwellers the opportunity to experience traditional Zen practice in the midst of their daily lives, and provides ample opportunities for the Sangha to practice, work, and celebrate together. We hold daily zazen and chanting services, monthly all-day sits, and weekend sesshins, which include teisho, dokusan, Dharma talks and practice interviews. We also offer classes and other programs online.

Introduction to Zen Meditation

Please join us for Introduction to Zen Meditation on Thursday evenings. Newcomers to the temple are requested to attend one introductory session before joining the community for regular zazen practice or other scheduled events. Health Protocols apply. Read More

Weekly Zazen Schedule

New York Zendo is open for zazen five days a week: Monday through Thursday mornings from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. Our evening schedule is 7 – 9 p.m. on Monday through Wednesday, and 6:45 – 9 p.m. on Thursday. On Sunday, we have our full morning chanting service, zazen, & temple cleaning, all beginning at 10 a.m. Health Protocols apply. Read More

All-Day Sits / Weekend Sesshins

Spending one or more days immersed in Zen practice in the middle of the city is a rare and precious opportunity. These intense, silent meditation retreats help deepen one’s zazen experience and help prepare for longer sesshins at Dai Bosatsu Zendo. Read More
