Online: Noh Chanting Workshop: Revitalize With Noh
May 1 @ 10:00 am - 3:45 pm
Center your mind with deep breath and vocalization.
Revitalize your energy.
Blossom your heart!
We welcome back Mayo Miwa Sensei, whose classes have been so enthusiastically received. At the request of Shinge Roshi, Miwa Sensei returns to offer this Noh workshop.
Beginners are welcome and sessions are offered in both English and Japanese. Miwa Sensei will guide us to experience utai (Noh recitation), using deep breath and internal core muscles as we work with one of the most popular Noh chants, Yuya, and its theme comparing the life of a flower and the life of a human being. This theme resonates with a haiku by Soen Roshi: “All beings are flowers, blooming in a blooming universe.”
Noh theater, central to traditional Japanese cultural heritage and aesthetics, is the oldest of the world’s continually performed classical theaters. Noh was established in the 14th century and is deeply influenced by Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Each performance is a singular spiritual immersion that the actors, musicians, and audience manifest together. As Shinge Roshi has said, “Noh has at its core the expression of sunyata.”
New York-based artist Mayo Miwa Sensei began her training with a Noh master at age 14, and graduated from Tokyo University majoring in Noh theater. Since coming to New York in 2004, Miwa Sensei has taught Noh dance and chanting for groups and individuals, as a member of the Noh Society, and has collaborated with contemporary musicians.
