Online: Film Screening, White Right: Meeting the Enemy

May 16 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Follows zazen at 11.
Director Deeyah Khan, a Muslim filmmaker, had received death threats and racially charged hate mail from the far-right movement after giving a BBC TV interview in which she advocated diversity and multiculturalism. This film documents her face-to-face discussions with neo-Nazis and white nationalists, in an effort to understand why people embrace political extremism based on hatred and violent ideology.

Given the current polarization of our society — which often manifests as physical or verbal violence — how do we respond to aggressive speech and actions? Do we have the courage of the bodhisattva to look inside at our own human emotions, including fear and anger? Can we meet ourselves with respect, compassion, and dignity and extend this to all beings? Join the Engaged Buddhism Open Meeting on May 26 at 7 p.m. for a follow-up discussion on the film.

We are grateful to Kyotai Amanda Hill and Daishin Pawel Wojtasik for making this film available to our Sangha, and to Chigan Roshi and his wife Shuko who generously purchased the rights to the film on behalf of ZSS.
