Online: Zen and the Brahmavihara

November 15, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

The Brahmavihara, variously translated as “The Divine Abodes,” “Sublime Attitudes,” or “Immeasurable Virtues,” represent the boundless qualities of an open heart and mind. There are innumerable methods and techniques for developing greater intimacy with the Brahmavihara — Metta (universal good-will or loving-kindness), Karuna (compassion), Mudita (sympathetic joy) and Upekka (Equanimity). These techniques are not a replacement for Zen practice, but a complement to it, helping to loosen the bonds of self-centered delusion while stabilizing the heart/mind.

Taught by Hokuto Dan Diffin Sensei, this eight-week course begins Sunday, Sept. 20, and will meet from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Participants will explore methods aimed at the cultivation of the Brahmavihara. Each class will include theory, practice, and discussion. All practitioners are welcome, regardless of their level of experience. The course will meet online via Zoom.

The best way to profit from this course is by committing to attend all eight classes, and to perform the assigned home practice (roughly 45-60 minutes daily).

Recommended donation for the course is $100. If single classes are attended, a donation of $20 is recommended.
