NYZ: Screening of “16 Bars”
February 2 @ 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm
16 Bars: Documentary Screening
16 Bars follows a unique rehabilitation effort in a Virginia jail that encourages inmates to write and record original music. In the jail’s makeshift recording studio, four men collaborate to produce an album with Grammy-winner Todd “Speech” Thomas of Arrested Development. As the creative process unfolds, these incarcerated artists confront their pasts, and dig deep to express the trauma of living through poverty, addiction and violence. The film and album seek to lift up the voices and stories of incarcerated people and to shed light on the complex issues in the lives of these men and in our criminal justice system.
This screening will be presented by sangha member and producer of the film Yūki Eric Michels, along with producer and editor Sammy Dane. Screening to be followed by a group discussion and Q&A.
No reservation required; free-will contribution.
