NYZ: Foundations of Yoga

“Access mind through body… use asana to sculpt the mind” – B.K.S. Iyengar
All are welcome to join in an open level yoga class led by Maya Piergies (200 RYT), Sundays after morning service. For one hour, we will explore the physical and subtle bodies through the practice of classical yoga postures (asana), breathwork (pranayama), and concentration (dharana). Each class will include alignment instruction for postures that incorporate balance, twists, and some inversion. The 8 limbs of classical yoga plus practices from various traditions will be introduced. With mindful awareness, we will experiment with our flexibility, strength, effort, and relaxation on the inner journey towards integration.

Maya Piergies has been consistently practicing and training in various styles of yoga for over a decade. She is certified by Dou Yoga in Brooklyn and has additional certifications in Trauma Informed Yoga and Yoga for 12 Step Recovery. She is a sangha member of New York Zendo/Dai Bosatsu Zendo. Maya has a regular meditation practice and finds yoga to be a natural compliment to zen practice. Currently, she is exploring kundalini and yin yoga. She has experienced the power of yoga to reduce suffering and lighten up.
