DBZ: A special Intro to Zen: Forest Bathing Weekend
October 11 @ 4:00 pm - October 13 @ 3:00 pm
Forest Bathing, a cornerstone of healing in Japanese medicine, will be among the events offered at a special Introduction to Zen weekend at Dai Bosatsu Zendo. Bhante Suddhaso, a Buddhist monk trained in Zen as well as in the Theravada Thai Forest Tradition, will lead us in shinrin-yoku (literally, “forest bathing”). Rooted in ancient Shinto and Buddhist practices, this simple but profound meditative practice involves connecting deeply with nature in silence, through all the senses. Shinrin-yoku is supported by scientific research as an effective way to promote mental and physical health.
The program begins with an orientation late Friday afternoon. Our Abbot, Shinge Roshi, will give a Dharma talk Saturday night. Since Indigenous People’s Day is Monday, Sunday’s morning service chanting will be dedicated to the original inhabitants of the Catskill Mountains. The schedule will also include yoga, zazen, and guided hikes to a pond, wetlands, and other sites of interest in the vast nature sanctuary that is Dai Bosatsu Zendo. The weekend concludes with a question-and-answer period led by Shinge Roshi and Bhante on Sunday morning, followed by an informal lunch.
The fee for all teachings, programs, meals, and accommodations for the weekend is $250 per person (members’ rate, $225). Due to our Beecher House renovation project, we have less space available, so you’ll want to sign up early for this year’s event.
